A time to help and to be kind

Do more than belong: participate. Do more than care: help. Do more than believe: practice. Do more than be fair: be kind. Do more than forgive: forget. Do more than dream: work.
--William Arthur Ward

Three weeks ago today my mother in law fell and broke her leg, a dangerous fracture of the femur.  It was a traumatic experience transporting her to hospital and having her admitted to a high care ward.  She has since been operated on, been in ICU and an ordinary ward, and was discharged from hospital a week ago.  Home nursing a senile, incontinent completely bedridden person is more than a full time job.
My life is once again on hold.  I am doing my best to help and to be kind.  There are times when life is all about living for the needs of others.  I know that I will have an opportunity and the energy in future to dream again, and to work towards my own goals.

  1. Hi Megan! What sad news, I hope your mother in law will recover well.
For many years I've been a nurse in a hospital and for more over than 10 years I also took care for my parents, when they were in their far 80s, my Mom had Alzheimers and my Dad was blind. So, I do know how it must be for you........it is very difficult to live your own life, if these things happen like this. I wish you lots of strength and patience, but you also have to take good care for yourself too!
    Warm hug, Ilona

  2. You are a wonderful person, Megan. Not many daughters-in-law would do what you are doing. God Bless you. You are a very caring and strong woman, never forget that.

  3. Bless you Megan, Life can be hard. Just think of what it means to your mother in law to have you to nurse her. You do need a little break every now and again, so you can have coffee, a laugh and a chat with friends then you will have the strength to continue again.
    Thinking of you.
    Hugs Kay

  4. Hello, Megan
I had the same care for my mother-in-law that you have. It was for two years, and my life was put on hold. I am a Christian, but even with the fortitude that is in my heart, it was still one of the most difficult times of my life. It has taught me since, that God wanted me to press forward, and give my services even though I had to let go of my own desires. And he gave me the strength to do what I had to do, but some days my body crashed, and my Down's syndrome son would keep his grandma happy just watching television shows or vintage movies. I have found that life doesn't always dole out what we want it too. I am a doll maker, so my dolls were what kept my sanity. And there are always other 'relations' in the family that can make the care of an invalid parent more difficult for the one in whose home the parent is in. And, yes, I do feel it took some years off my life, but maybe that is what God wanted for me. We can't always know the rhyme nor reason of why things are as they are. I pray a lot, and press on, as Grandma has now been in heaven since the fall of 2011. Life goes on.
Forgiving and forgetting the trials does take time, and some of us are 'used up' faster than others.
Bless you for your courage, and may God continue to give you strength daily.
